Springtime Series with Amy
Thursdays in May 6-8:30pm
Positively Transitioning from Winter to Spring.
Each year as we seasonally move from winter to spring we begin to feel a change. A change from feelings of hibernation, slower movements and deep internalizing to more wakefulness and spriteliness. Join me as we honor and cultivate this change as we truly open up to the life blossoming in us and around us.
May 5th: The Seed: Breathe to Transform the Body
Exploration and practice of meditations, breath techniques and gentle yoga. All designed to activate the seed within us ready to come out of hibernation and dive into liveliness.
May 12th: The Sprout: Somatics and Yoga
Softly gliding in reclined poses to release the joints and deeper set muscles. Soma means "of the body" and we will use this soft, slow and small movements class to nourish the newly sprouted plant of ourselves.
May 19th: The Stem: Unshield the Heart
Learn supported and unsupported backbend techniques to continue the growth of ourselves into true wakefulness. Gradually open your heart to stimulate your cells towards your ultimate blossoming. Easy flow to warm our muscles towards the discovery.
May 26th: The Blossom: Integration of Awareness
Draw upon all of the learned techniques of the prior classes in the series to blossom fully into Spring. Using our awakened understanding of meditation, breathing and a truly opened heart, we will move through a light to moderate flow class to find ourselves transitioned out of state of deep internalizing.
All classes are designed for everyone. Each class will include handouts. Feel free to bring a notepad and pen as you may feel called to note take on things that move you.

Intro to Yoga Series (6 week session)
This series will approach learning the basics of yoga through a graduated lens. Each week, we will build upon what we learned the week before and develop a fuller sense of how our bodies move. We will take our time learning the most traditional yoga postures and how to get into and out of them. You will learn how to support and ground your experience for where you are right now. 60 minutes each class. Sorry, no drop in and no make up classes. $90/series
Chatu-What? Workshop
Chaturanga Dandasana (the four limb staff pose). You’ve heard those words uttered in class. You’ve seen people lower down like a hover craft around you. Yet, what’s it’s purpose? If you haven’t developed the strength to do it, how do you get there? Perhaps, you’ve been practicing it for some time, but are stressing your joints, without even knowing you are. This is the workshop for you!
We will learn about purpose, function and form. We will weave it into it’s perfect connection with upward facing dog and downward facing dog to feel the potential and benefit of this asana. Working together, we will help ourselves (and others) move to a keener sense of awareness of this somewhat elusive pose. 90 minutes.
$25.

Each student is moving at their level towards and within standing and seated poses, backbends and inversions. Level 1-2. 60 minutes.

Building Kidney Chi
In traditional Chinese medicine, winter is the time of revitalization and especially of the kidneys. Building up Chi (energy) in these organs helps them to function optimally by regulating the waters of our body, removing waste and more. They are tiny powerhouses of our bodies! Creating this Chi through backbends and giving them a squeeze, followed by flooding these aquifers with nourishing blood will bring a satisfying renewal feeling to our entire selves.
$18
Every hour and a half class it is helpful to have a blanket, and block, a strap and a chair (optional). Also, all classes are recorded and with prior payment (a minimum of two hours prior to class time) a link of the recording will be sent to you after class.

Nourishing the Bone Matrix
Finding the truest physical power of a practice can be found by supporting the framework within. Applying force to our body helps to build bone density. Nourishing this living tissue by using poses such as mountain pose and handstand to tonify, is the way to build strength of form from the inside out.

The Great Spiral: Twists to Move Inwards
Twisting is one of the many ways to rejuvenate our bodies. In this winter season it is important to balance between the deep and abiding rest that we may need and bringing vitality to ourselves. In spiraling inwards we find this calm we are looking for as we draw closer to our foundation. Find this grounding while we twist from standing all the way down to reclining on the earth.

Hearing Clearly: Awakening the Ears
Sonic waves and temporal vibrations. We are attune to the sounds outside ourselves. Reacting in kind through our bodies as we process. How can we approach this from the inside? Listening to subtle cycles internally can help us discover what is in balance and what is not. Working with the bones of our head and body and following the path of breath and our own rhythmic pulsations through poses we will discover how to use our ears to awaken.

Bowing to the Earth
Folding forward with reverence is a way to connect with our inner selves in this season of quiet and reflection. Even though hibernation and shedding of leaves is outside of our realm, the feeling of dormancy is certainly within it. Gaining wisdom of grounding and foundation by drawing closer to the earth and her energy. Spending time in poses that pull us in, curl us in, and allow us to bow to the earth is our path in this class.

Circulating the Waters Within
We are fluid creatures. Fluid in our movements, our words and in our thoughts. We are also fluid within our bodies. This shifting world of water in us creates swirls and tides that seem to flow in and out. Attending to the areas of ourselves that are associated with water, such as the kidneys and the bladder, we will then move towards the surface of the skin and go with the currents in us.

Balancing
When we balance in yoga, it is quantified in many ways. Can you balance on your head or stand on one foot? If you can, they do indicate a sense of balance, but where does that balance come from? Are we able to find it in our emotions? In our input and output of actions? Can you find it while relaxing in a deep and restorative way? Explore how we can be more aware of our mental, emotional and physical states and how they affect our balance figuratively and literally through meditation, breath work (pranayama) and poses (asanas).

Cranial-Sacral Connection
There is a beautiful flow of movement from the head to the pelvis and back again. This is part of what forms of cranial – sacral connection. Any disruption in either space can reduce that flow. In this class we will aim to sink into and feel the bones of both areas. We will find the relationship to each other and how strengthening and supporting both serves our well-being.

Rest and Reflection
Winter is the time to create opportunities to conserve and revitalize. At the beginning of every new year many seem to move in opposition to this concept. Working harder and faster than previously and generally stopping or falling off sooner than one had hoped. Moving with rest and reflection creates a “slow burn” towards lasting movement, recuperation and a sustained practice for the year.

Walking Over the Bridge
Construction of a bridge/shoulderstand (setu bandha sarvangasana) or commonly known as the “bridge pose” is one of the first substantial backbends in yoga. Accessible to many and often practice with enthusiasm as a bridge towards more engaging backbends. It’s also a key component to the inversion Shoulderstand (Salamba sarvangasana). We will work our bodies to open up, prep and construct (or enhance) this pose safely and comprehensively.

The Dorsal Fin
Counteracting the over exaggerated rounded back, due to a variety of common practices today, is of vital importance to our health. Many of these activities tax our adrenal glands and our kidneys, leaving them depleted. This “fin” on our back compresses the lungs, reducing ease in our breath and often leads to a repositioning of the head. These issues can be addressed starting with SATYA (Sensory Awareness Training for Yoga Attunement) work, slowly moving towards an asana practice and finishing with supported poses.

Dropping Stress. Building Calm
Stress is a pervading feature of our society. Being willing to learn and then to continue practicing ways to relieve the body of this intensity is vastly helpful to the individual. Building a place of contentment in the self helps to reduce strain on the heart, aids in digestion, allows for an easier breath and much more. Working with breath, meditation, movement and dedication to yourself for these 90 minutes is the beginning of relieving your stress and beginning a pathway to equanimity

The Power of Breath
Inhale. Exhale. Inhale. Exhale. It seems like a relatively easy task to do, and wonderfully, our bodies do this on a regular basis to keep us going. Powerful in itself. We can harness the power of our breath and use it in so many ways. At this time of the year, is a grand opportunity to learn how to cultivate it for de-stressing, creating ease and releasing tension. Following the natural rhythms of winter, we will engage with our breath in different ways to enhance our postures and feel the fulfillment of a full breath.

Zesty Adrenals
These useful organs are responsible for regulating blood pressure, releasing adrenaline and more. They can help our bodies in times of stress by releasing hormones to help us manage a moment in a survivalist type of way. They can also help combat low levels of fatigue by being engaged. Managing these zesty and zippy adrenals through movement and breath, is a way to find balance between high and low levels of energy.

Warming Up From Within
Keeping in tune with the gradual progression towards Spring, we know and feel the amount of sunlight and warmth we are receiving is a little more. The soil is moving towards a space of warming up and able to support the growth of seeds and new roots. With us, it is the same. Beginning with twists and swirls to awaken and warm, then layering in our warm inducing breath, ujjayi pranayama. Practicing at a reduced speed to start to fan the embers held within this winter season.

Considering that our body is our home and our temple, one way that we can bring great harmony to this fine establishment of ours is to bring some love and attention to our hips. Releasing tension in the hips can help free up tension held in our backs and in our shoulders and our neck. Create tone in the hips and we begin to support our knees and ankles. Happy hips equal a happy home.

Supporting The liver meridian
The liver is a main organ that helps our body with three vital functions: detoxification, synthesis and storage. We will support this helpful structure by moving along meridian points from our feet, up our inner legs, all the way to the liver itself. By working this channel we will help regulate the amount of blood circulating, withdrawing and storing while we practice.

Asteya/nonstealing
Yamas: Generally, this portion of the yoga sutras is concerned with the world around us and our interaction with it. It a lens that we can use to help us to become more authentic towards ourselves and others. This month, our physical practice will be examined through the exploration of the first four Yamas.
Asteya/nonstealing
Asteya often comes to life from thoughts like, ‘I’m not good enough’ or ‘I don’t have enough’. This can come from a lack of faith in ourselves. In yoga (which means ‘to yoke’, ‘unite’, ‘connect’, or essentially to become ‘whole’) we practice each aspect of yoga on and off the mat, and start to move towards feeling as though we already have enough, and we already are enough within ourselves.

Satya/truthfulness

These Niyamas helps to give us the ability to recognise the habits we have picked up in our life that no longer serve us and encourages us to accept and appreciate what we have and what we are, right now. Idealistically we need to sift through the ‘impurities’ or negativity we’ve picked up before reaping the benefits of yoga and it is from this point that we can move forward in our life and practice with more ease.

Swadyaya/self study & Ishwara pranidhana/surrender
These two sutras are often expressed as studying ancient texts and a giving of oneself to a creation higher than oneself. Both are true, however, both are more complex, just as is language and life. Swadyaya is also about self reflection and the study of ourselves. Allowing us to consider the things that serve us as well as harm us. It also encourages us to put time into whatever inspires and fascinates us, deepening our own knowlege. In surrendering, we free ourselves of our expectations. Hugging to the Middle
Drawing to the midline of our bodies helps us to integrate our movements and find stability. Belly hug, and hand balances
If we can train ourselves how to hug in at our bellies and at our midline, we will find a truly powerful source. Too often our thoughts are moved towards our extremities (which are rightfully important) and away from our center. Once we can draw in, be are more apt to be balanced. Finding this balance we can then expertly use it within our hand balances as well as when we are on our own two feet.
